Ari leads 3 groups which play his original music: his Quintet, Ari Hoenig Nonet, and Trio. The Nonet performs Ari’s original compositions arranged by Noam Wiesenberg and features various high caliber players in the New York area. The trio is with Gilad Hekselman and Orlando le Fleming and has toured extensively in Europe, Japan and South America.

As an educator, Ari teaches privately and is on faculty at New York University and the New School for Social Research in New York

Ari Hoenig, jazz drummer extraordinaire, picked me up from the airport when I first landed in NYC-and then immediately made ME drive us around. The nerve! In this episode, we do a deep dive on the Happy Birthday song, and discuss the art of building tension, having fun on the job, and how our songs make us who are.

EP 7: Edel Meade is a Champion of Brigids! (AND Patricias!)

Edel Meade Promo1.jpeg

A strikingly original artist working in the field of jazz, folk and contemporary music; Edel Meade is a songwriter, vocalist and educator from County Tipperary, Ireland. Her latest musical project, Brigids and Patricias was released on International Women’s Day, 8th March 2021 to critical acclaim. This stunning collection of original compositions reflects on what it means to be a woman living in 21st century Ireland, informed by Irish history, Irish folklore and contemporary society. Her voice has been described as mesmerising or magical even, while her music is haunting and powerful…

Kate McGarry introduced me to Edel Meade, and I am forever grateful! I immediately felt at home with her music, which evokes misty forests, working class neighborhoods, changelings, and everything in between. In this episode, we talk strong women, witch hunts, stories old and new, and the cracks where the light gets in.

EP 5: Kerri Green is a Classical Nerd!

Look!

Look how cute we are as college kids! Kerri is on the left. I’m pretending to be goth on the right.

Kerri and I met in the freshman dorm bathroom at BYU. Since then, duets have been played, marriages and births celebrated, losses grieved. In this episode, we talk about the benefits of doing bad work, rejecting perfectionism, exceptional teachers, and the miracle of music. She recorded a piece for each of her four kids when they were born, as a sort of lullaby. Below, she plays one of these (the one for her daughter Kate); an Aria from Bach’s Goldberg Variations. In the video following it, her Kate plays the same piece— for her own senior recital. CHILLS!

Look, Ma! Four hands! I’m the one on the left, undoubtedly making a mistake. Kerri Youngberg Green is on right—a brilliant pianist and teacher! You can find her teaching at her private studio in North Salt Lake, Utah, or online. She’s also an adjunct professor of music at Westminster College.

The band’s 8th CD “Still Life with Trouble,” was released in 2017. Since the early 2000s, Nathanson has primarily concentrated on a combining text and music and he formed his band “Sotto Voce,” for that purpose. This ensemble has released three CDs including “Subway Moon.” “Subway Moon,” is also the title of Roy’s first published poetry book and an active non-profit organization which presents intergenerational, inter-disciplinary performances around the world. I met Kate McGarry years ago, an angel in NYC, somewhere singing at a club. She captivated me! She ended up singing with a big band of mine, and I’d come see her collaborations and marvel at how pure her voice sounded.
